PFAS Contamination Remediation

Often referred to as ‘Forever Chemicals’ Per and Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances (PFAS) are a suite of fluorinated chemicals which have been made and used in commercial products globally, since the 1940s. Two of the best-known PFAS compounds are perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), often also known as perfluorinated tensides (PFT). 

PFAS are toxic, mobile, persistent (bio-accumulative) and very difficult to break down in the natural environment. Part of the ‘Emerging Contaminants’ group, they are fast becoming one of the most significant problems in the environmental industry impacting soil, groundwater, plants, animals and human health. 

PFAS is a global problem and is a rapidly developing, complex area of scientific knowledge and research. We believe that understanding and solving the PFAS issues requires collaboration.    

Although only becoming the environmental industry ‘hot topic’ recently we have been developing expertise in PFAS contamination since 2019. We have formed strong partnerships with leading technology suppliers, chemists, laboratories, consultants and regulators across the world to help bring some of the best available remediation solutions to clients with PFAS problems.  

At ATG Group, our engagement in numerous PFAS remediation projects, many of which are of sensitive nature, underscores our commitment to addressing this issue comprehensively. Moreover, we have spent around £500,000 on R&D, reflecting our unwavering dedication to staying at the forefront of innovative solutions. 

The latest regulations require replacing PFAS-containing Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) products with fluorine-free foams (FFF). PFAS is known to form chemical bonds with the tank/pipework surfaces so simply flushing the systems with water is not effective at removing residual PFAS compounds and recontamination of the replacement FFF foams is inevitable. We offer a specialist contracting service for purging, rinsing and flushing out the systems, tanks and associated piping to eradicate PFAS contamination and prevent cross-contamination of replacement FFF. 

We have sourced some of the best remediation technologies from across the globe and are actively involved in the development of innovative new PFAS treatment technologies for soils and water. Our projects and studies encompass a spectrum of approaches, from source treatment stabilisation using our innovative LockedIn® (link to LockedIn page) technology through to bespoke Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRBs) and specialist pump and treat systems for groundwater treatment. We are partnering with technology experts and universities to develop innovative technologies for the destruction of PFAS in soils and water.  

We are working with water companies, fire services, airports, developers, main contractors, lawyers, insurance companies, laboratories, chemists, universities, technology providers/institutes regulators and consultants to tackle the PFAS problem.
