Brownfield Sites Stabilisation and Restoration

Brownfield sites often require pre-work to ensure maximum viability, presenting a range of potential issues such as contamination and earthwork requirements. We can solve all your issues by efficiently managing the treatment of contamination and instability of brownfield sites, transforming them into plots suitable for thriving and sustainable developments.

The process starts with a thorough site walkover and historical search to look for former uses along with geological and hydrogeological interpretation. This will be followed by intrusive site surveys and soil testing through methods like trial pits, hand pits and boreholes.

If contamination is present, our remediation solutions will be custom designed to ensure that the site will be de-risked and ready for development at the end of our process. We guarantee our results, and we work with independent laboratories to conduct testing to confirm the effectiveness of the remedial process.

Even if the site is free of contamination, it may still require earthworks to achieve the ideal foundation for construction or development. Our team is equipped to handle earthworks and, if any unsuitable materials are encountered during excavations, we can provide cost-efficient methods to treat them to avoid costly landfill disposal which will save you money.

We understand that the remediation methods for brownfield sites depend on factors like contamination type and level, duration of its presence and the site’s general condition. To provide you with a better understanding of the site issues, we offer a range of survey options. This allows us to assess the site and offer you all remediation methods tailored to your needs.

We also offer a cutting-edge solution for licensed waste treatment. Waste from the site must undergo proper classification, otherwise, it will be treated as hazardous waste, leading to exorbitant disposal costs at landfills. The most common way of disposing of contaminated waste from a site is the “dig and dump” approach.

By using our innovative LockedIn® technology, we effectively contain the contamination within the soil and eliminate the need for expensive landfill disposal. This means the treated material can remain on-site, which significantly reduces the reliance on landfill disposal. LockedIn® presents significant cost savings to you and reduces landfill consumption, promoting a more sustainable waste management strategy.

Choose ATG Group. Your project’s success and the well-being of the environment are our utmost priorities. Our expertise, combined with a focus on sustainability and cost-efficiency, ensures that your brownfield site is prepared for successful development!

No matter the challenge you face, we have the perfect solution for you. From land stabilisation to tackling invasive plant species and managing oil spills, we have the best solutions for all your environmental concerns.
Brownfield Remediation Methods
Physical Containment
Through the implementation of in-ground barriers, we have developed a highly effective approach to contain and control contamination at its source. These barriers act as a protective filter, preventing the spread of pollutants and reducing their potential environmental impact. By strategically placing these barriers, we create a physical divide that hinders the movement of contaminants, ensuring they remain confined to their designated areas.

We can implement an internal drainage system that collects and contains all contaminated water within the landfill area. By effectively sealing and securing the contaminated waste, we ensure the utmost protection for the surroundings.
In-situ and Ex-situ Bioremediation
We address contamination in-situ, utilising innovative bioremediation techniques such as biostimulation, bioinjection and bioaugmentation. These techniques are cost-effective because we avoid excavation and everything is done on-site.

In cases where excavation is necessary, we also do ex-situ bioremediation, involving the removal of contaminants for treatment either on-site or at an off-site facility. Currently, we have our own site that serves the island of Ireland where we undertake a range of treatment technologies, making the process more sustainable and cost-effective. At the heart of our principles lies environmental stewardship and we continuously strive to enhance our collection of ex-situ remediation sites as proof of our firm commitment.
Thermal Desorption
We employ soil heating technology, a highly effective method to safely remove contaminants from the site, delivering an effective remediation solution. By applying controlled heat, we accelerate the breakdown and removal of harmful substances, ensuring the restoration of the environment.

Using an advanced monitoring system, we optimise the heating process, minimising the ecological footprint and resource usage which will save you money.
Soil Stabilisation
With our comprehensive soil stabilisation process, we take the necessary steps to address contaminated soils. This includes excavating the soil, conducting proper classification and utilising a range of innovative techniques like high shear mixing or specialised excavators. Once treated and mixed with binders, the soil is carefully reinstated and compacted, ensuring stable and secure ground conditions.

Find out more about our innovative LockedIn® technology that allows you to reuse contaminated soils on-site after treatment and validation.
Chemical Oxidation
At the forefront of our remediation techniques is chemical oxidation, a highly effective method that harnesses the power of oxidants to convert hazardous contaminants into safer compounds. By using this in-situ approach, we eliminate the necessity for extensive soil excavation or groundwater pumping, ensuring a cost-efficient and environmentally friendly clean-up process.

In our in-situ treatment process for soil and groundwater, we inject oxidants into the subsurface by pumping them into wells that we installed at varying depths within the contaminated area. This approach allows us to ensure maximum coverage of dissolved and undissolved contaminants. Once the oxidants are introduced through the wells, they disperse throughout the surrounding soil and groundwater, initiating a transformative reaction that neutralises contaminants and facilitates their elimination.
Vacuum Extraction
Vacuum extraction removes volatile contamination from the soil, ensuring effective and efficient remediation. By utilising a system of strategically placed underground wells, we specifically target and remove volatile contaminants in their vapour form. We effectively target and mitigate volatile contamination in the unsaturated zone and ensure a thorough remediation process by applying a vacuum through vertical or horizontal wells.
