ATG Group’s Envirovalve Installation Eliminates Contamination Risk For Site

The Challenge

IFF produces a variety of essences for the perfume and toiletries industry and therefore has a need to store several different chemicals, fuels and packaging materials on site. As part of the company’s efforts to reduce the risk of a pollution incident and comply with legislation, it was decided that a firewater retention pond would be installed, into which any firewater runoff generated in the event of an emergency on site would be diverted. Firewater runoff contaminated with either the chemicals stored on site or foam used in dealing with chemical fires can be a major source of pollution once it enters a drainage system. The major stumbling block to the project was a cost effective and reliable method of sealing the discharge drain and diverting the out flowing firewater into the new retention tank.

The Solution

A 100,000 gallon tank was constructed in the grounds of the plant close to both the front boundary and the main storm water drain discharging from the site. The decision was taken to install an Envirovalve Emergency Drain Security System as the final seal to the drain in the event of a fire. The Envirovalve would be automatically activated by a signal from the onsite fire alarm system, instantly sealing the discharge from site and diverting the firewater runoff to the retention tank. The Envirovalve system is powered by a 12volt battery which is constantly trickle fed from an associated solar panel in order to keep the unit constantly charged and in a guaranteed state of readiness. Should all the power to the site fail, the system is still able to provide the same level of security as it does not require connection to site services. The Envirovalve bladder assembly was housed in a simple block built chamber within the drainage system and a stainless steel bracket system manufactured and installed to enable mounting of the control unit cabinet and the solar panel.

The Benefits

Benefit 1

Benefit 1

The company now has complete peace of mind that should the worst happen, the resulting heavily contaminated firewater runoff is safely contained within the boundaries of the plant and cannot cause an offsite environmental issue.

Benefit 2

Benefit 2

As the system also has full manual activation, the Envirovalve also provides instant containment should any other type of spill incident occur. Thus saving the site valuable time and money in both cleanup costs and possible fines.

Benefit 3

Benefit 3

Thanks to the envirovalve being connected to the sites fire alarm control system, automatic and instant activation can occur in case the worst may happen.
